📖 How to play Conquest: Europe 1914

You are blue; the computers are red, green, gold, violet and orange (you choose 2 to 6 players, 6 is the default). Take over the whole map. The 50 territories belong to 12 power blocs (the thick dark lines mark them, the names are written on the map and in the key under it). Hold every territory of a bloc and you get bonus armies each turn.

Setting up

  • The territories are dealt out evenly, one army on each. Then everyone places their remaining starting armies, three at a time in turn. You choose how many armies each tap places (the − and + buttons, 1 or All), or press Auto-place.

Your turn: three steps

  • 1. Reinforce. You get armies equal to your territories ÷ 3 (rounded down, at least 3), plus the bonus of each bloc you hold completely. Tap your territories to place them, as many at a time as you set.
  • 2. Attack (as often as you like, or not at all). Tap one of your territories with 2 or more armies, then an enemy neighbour (a shared border, or a dashed sea route). The attacker rolls up to 3 dice (always one army stays behind), the defender up to 2. Compare the highest dice, then the next: the higher die wins, ties go to the defender. Each loss costs one army. Blitz keeps rolling until you win or can’t go on.
  • When the last defender dies you take the territory and move in: a slider lets you choose how many armies (at least as many as dice you rolled).
  • 3. Fortify. Once, move any number of armies from one of your territories to another that you can reach through your own territories. At least one stays behind. This ends your turn.

The pictures and the scenery

  • The army picture grows with the stack: one soldier (1 to 3), two soldiers (4 to 8), a cannon and a soldier (9 to 15), a cannon and two soldiers (16 or more). The number is always shown.
  • Mountains, forests, rivers and lakes are only decoration: they do not change the rules. Use Zoom in to look closely and scroll the map with your finger.

Winning

  • A player with no territories is out. Win by being the last one standing.
  • Short game stops after round 15 and the player with the most territories (then most armies) wins. A full game stops after round 100 the same way.

Tips

  • Small blocs with few entrances (Switzerland, the British Isles, Iberia) are easy to hold; the big ones pay more (Russian Empire +7) but have long borders.
  • The map follows today’s coastlines and borders, grouped into the powers of 1914, so it is only roughly historical. It is a game, not a history lesson.
  • This version has no cards. The computers are decent but not clever; Hard picks its fights by the odds and by which blocs it can complete.
