Outbreak
You died
The dead win this round.
📖 How to play Outbreak
The mission in every city: save all of the survivors. If one of them dies, you fail.
A top-down survival shooter in the style of an old console role-playing game. Three cities, each full of zombies. In every city you must beat the horde and its bosses (the swarm never stops, even after the last boss), find one special person (or, in the last city, the antidote) and get them to the safe house (a blue roof with a big red cross, a green flag and a light beam). Along the way you can rescue other survivors, loot houses and rest.
Controls
- Move: the stick (phone) or W A S D / arrow keys. You face the way you walk.
- Fire: hold the FIRE button (or Space). While you hold it you stop turning, so you can walk backwards and keep shooting. Auto aim points your shots at the boss if one is in range, otherwise at the nearest zombie, so you can concentrate on walking (you can turn it off in the settings).
- Act (E): search a cupboard, sleep in a bed, rescue a survivor. Gun (Q): switch weapon. 🍖 💧 🩹 (keys 1, 2, 3): eat, drink, use a bandage.
- Doors: walk into a door to go inside, and into the mat at the bottom of the room to come out. Zombies cannot follow you in, and time for them stops while you are inside. Bleeding and starving also pause while you are indoors, but hunger and thirst keep ticking slowly.
Staying alive
- Health only comes back slowly while you are fed and watered, or from a bandage (+35) or sleeping in a bed (+55, but it costs food and water). Zombies can make you bleed: you lose health until you use a bandage.
- Food and water drain all the time. At zero you lose health. Eat and drink from your bag, and loot more.
- Ammo: you start with 1000 bullets. Each gun uses a different amount per shot (pistol 1, twin 2, triple 3, machine gun 1, bombs 5). Ammo is scarce: every city has the same small amount, hidden in different houses, and bosses drop a little more.
Weapons
- Pistol: one shot forward. Twin shot: forward and backward. Triple shot: three angles. Machine gun: very fast. Bomb launcher: three bombs with a big blast.
- Weapons are found in the armoury of each city (the dark red roof with a gun on the minimap), and the first boss drops the machine gun. You keep what you find in the next cities.
Survivors
- There are about 10 survivors in every city, some waiting in the street and some hiding inside houses. Several of them know a piece of the story and will tell you when you pick them up. Walk up to a survivor and press Act to take them with you (maximum 2 at a time). They follow you and throw a bomb in a random direction every few seconds, slower than your gun. Zombies can hurt them (they heal slowly if left alone, and fully when you sleep), and if a survivor dies the mission fails. Survivors who are waiting are safe until you pick them up.
- Walk into the safe house with them to save them. You get supplies for each one, and they can tell you more of the story. The story person is marked with an arrow at the edge of the screen.
Bosses
- Giants appear at set points in each city. Some charge (watch them flash, then step aside) and some call for help. The last boss of a city comes after the whole horde is dead.
Your game saves when a city starts. If you leave, “Continue” starts that city again with what you had.
