📖 How to play Mahjong

You sit at the bottom. three animal friends play against you (by default Mimi the cat on the right, Boba the panda across and Granny Fox on the left). You can pick your own avatar and theirs from 10 animals below the table. Everyone starts on 0 points; the best score when the game ends wins. Turns go round to your right: you, then the animal on your right, across, and on your left.

The tiles

  • Suits: 萬 characters, 筒 circles, 索 bamboo, each 1 to 9. Honours: winds 東南西北 and dragons 中 (red) 發 (green) 白 (blank frame). Four of each. Flowers 梅蘭菊竹 and 春夏秋冬: 8 bonus tiles. Draw one and it goes aside, you take a replacement at once. A flower with your own seat’s number scores.
  • Goal: make your hand into sets plus one pair. A set is a chow (three in a row of one suit, e.g. 3-4-5 萬) or a pung (three identical tiles). A kong is four identical tiles, counted as one set.

Your turn

  • You draw one tile, then tap a tile to select it and tap it again (or press Discard) to throw it. 💡 Hint suggests a discard; when you are one tile away, selecting a tile shows the tiles you would wait for.
  • When someone throws a tile you may claim it, using buttons that appear: 糊/胡 win (highest priority), 碰 pung (any player, for two identical tiles), 槓 kong (three identical), or 上/吃 chow (only from the player just before you, Granny Fox, using a tile that makes a run). A claimed set is shown face-up and then you must throw a tile. Pass to ignore.
  • With four identical tiles in hand you can declare a concealed kong (槓); a tile that matches one of your pungs can be added for a kong (加槓). Any kong gives you a replacement tile from the back of the wall.
  • 自摸 is winning on a tile you drew yourself. If the wall runs down to the last 14 tiles (16 in Taiwan) without a winner, the hand is a draw and the dealer stays.
  • The dealer (莊) plays first; the deal passes to the next player unless the dealer wins or the hand is drawn. One round is four deals (東 round). The game ends after one round (Short) or two rounds, 東 then 南 (Long).

🇭🇰 Hong Kong rules (13 tiles)

  • Each player holds 13 tiles; you win with 4 sets + a pair (or 十三么 thirteen orphans) and at least 3 faan (you can lower this in the settings). Some hands are complete but too small; the game tells you and you play on.
  • Faan: 自摸 self-draw 1 · 門前清 concealed (no 上/碰/明槓) 1 · 無花 no flowers 1 · 正花 own-seat flower 1 each · flower set of four 2 · 平糊 all chows with no honours 1 · 對對糊 all pungs 3 · 混一色 one suit + honours 3 · 清一色 one suit 7 · dragon pung 1 · seat wind pung 1 · round wind pung 1 · 小三元 5 · 大三元 8 · 小四喜 6 · 三暗刻 3 concealed pungs 3 · 槓上開花 1 · 海底撈月 1 · 河底撈魚 1 · 搶槓 1 · 混幺九 8.
  • Limit hands (10 faan, the maximum): 十三么, 字一色 all honours, 清幺九, 大四喜, 坎坎糊 (4 concealed pungs), 十八羅漢 (4 kongs), 天糊 / 地糊.
  • Payment (3-faan-minimum table): 3 faan 8 · 4 faan 16 · 5 faan 24 · 6 faan 32 · 7 faan 48 · 8 faan 64 · 9 faan 96 · 10 faan 128. If you win on someone’s discard, that player pays all of it. If you win by 自摸, each of the other three pays half. No dealer bonus.

This version

  • House rules differ from table to table; I used common ones. Left out: seven pairs, nine gates, 人胡, 七搶一, 對碰 fine points, and multiple players winning on one discard (the one closest after the thrower wins).
  • The three friends play sensibly but not like experts, and each has a style: Mimi is careful and rarely claims, Boba claims everything, Granny Fox collects one suit. You get no help except the 💡 Hint and the wait list.
